Certified Medication Technicians (CMTs) in Maryland are essential healthcare professionals who play a vital role in supporting registered nurses. They assist with medication administration, patient care, and documentation in various settings.
Key responsibilities of CMTs include:
Medication Administration: Under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, CMTs administer oral and topical medications to patients. They meticulously follow the five rights of medication administration to ensure safety and accuracy.
Documentation: CMTs maintain detailed records of medication administration, vital signs, and other relevant patient information.
Patient Observation: They closely monitor patients for any adverse reactions to medications and promptly report any concerns to the supervising nurse.
Resident Assistance: In addition to medication administration; CMTs may assist residents with activities of daily living such as: bathing, dressing, and feeding.
CMTs work in a variety of healthcare settings including: assisted living facilities, adult daycare centers, school health programs, and treatment centers. To practice in Maryland, CMTs must be certified by the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) and renew their certification every two years.
